No accounts and no sign-up
You do not need to register to use this site, and we do not ask for your name, email address or phone number anywhere on it. We therefore do not hold a user database.
Practice history on your device
When you finish a practice set and press the button to check your score, the site saves the result in your browser's localStorage under the key pte-progress:v1. Each saved attempt holds only: the task (for example Read Aloud), the practice-estimate percentage, the trait scores shown in the result (such as content or form, with the points and the maximum for each), the number of questions in the set, and the time you finished. It does not hold your typed answers, your essays, your recordings or any transcript. Older practice pages may still save a smaller record under keys that start with pte-practice:: the question ID, the score, the maximum and a timestamp.
All of this stays in your browser and is never sent to our servers. It works per browser and per device, so it will not follow you to another phone or laptop. On the My progress page the Export my data button downloads your saved attempts as a JSON file to your own device, and the Clear my data button deletes them (both the pte-progress:v1 key and any pte-practice:keys). You can also clear this site's data in your browser settings.
Saved mock test progress
The mock testscan save where you are so you can resume later. This saved mock progress is also kept only in your browser's localStorage, under keys that start with pte-mock. It holds which questions were chosen for your mock, how far you got, the answers you typed or selected, and the practice-estimate results of the speaking questions. If you turned on a transcript for a speaking question, the text of that transcript can be part of the saved result. It never contains audio. A saved mock is separate from the progress above: use Clear saved mockon the mock test page to remove it, or clear this site's data in your browser settings. Starting a new mock replaces the saved one.
Microphone and your recordings
Speaking practice asks your browser for microphone permission. Your recording is made and played back inside your browser and is not uploaded to our servers. The speaking pages do not save your audio anywhere, not even in localStorage: the recording is held in the page's memory and is discarded when you retry, close or leave the page. You can withdraw microphone permission at any time in your browser's site settings.
On-device transcript (speech model in your browser)
Speaking tasks offer an optional on-device transcript, used to estimate how closely you matched the prompt. It is off unless you choose it. When you do, your browser downloads a small speech-recognition model (Whisper) and runs it in a background worker on your own device after you stop recording. Your audio is processed locally: it is not uploaded to us or to anyone else, and it is not stored.
- What is downloaded: the transcription library (transformers.js) and one model, about 41 MB for the smaller model or about 77 MB for the more accurate, slower one, depending on which you pick.
- From where: your browser fetches the library from
cdn.jsdelivr.netand the model files fromhuggingface.coand its content-delivery network. This site does not host or receive these files. Those hosts, like any website you visit, see your IP address and normal request metadata such as your browser type. We do not control their logging; their own privacy policies apply. - Caching:the browser keeps the model in its cache storage (the Cache API), roughly 40 to 80 MB, so later sessions do not need to download it again. To remove it, clear this site's data in your browser settings.
- Saved text: the transcript text is used to work out your estimate. It is not saved in your progress history, though in a saved mock test the text can be kept on your device as described above.
Optional browser speech recognition
Some speaking tasks also offer a browser transcript, which uses your browser's built-in speech recognition (the Web Speech API). It is off unless you switch it on, and it is available in Chrome and Edge. In Chrome, the browser itself sends the audio to its own speech service to turn it into text, so that audio is handled under the browser maker's privacy terms, not ours. Other browsers may handle it differently. The transcript is used to work out your estimate on the page and is not saved in your progress history. If you prefer your audio to stay entirely on your device, use the on-device transcript or leave the transcript off; you can still record and listen back, and tick the key points you covered for a self-checked estimate where the task offers it.
Analytics
At the time of this update the site does not load any analytics or advertising tags. If we add privacy-respecting analytics later, this section will be updated first to say what is collected and why.
Cookies
The site does not set cookies of its own. Your practice history and any saved mock progress use localStorage, not cookies.
Server logs and retention
Like most websites, our web server writes standard access logs that include your IP address, the page requested, the time and your browser type. We use them for security and to fix problems. They are rotated daily and old logs are deleted after about two weeks. We do not combine them with anything else to identify individuals.
Fonts and third parties
Fonts are served from this site, not from a font provider. The optional on-device transcript does contact third-party hosts, described above. Our guides link out to official sources such as Pearson and government sites; once you follow a link, that site's own privacy policy applies.
Children
The site is general-audience educational content and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone, children included.
Your rights and requests
Because we keep no accounts and no practice data on our servers, there is generally nothing for us to give you or delete beyond routine server logs. For a question or request about privacy, see the contact page.
Changes
If we change what the site collects, we will update this page and its date. See also our terms of use.
