Editorial policyHow we check facts

Most PTE Core tasks have a matching Academic task that you can practise on this site, but Write Email, a Core-only task, has no practice page here yet. Pearson lists 7, 5 and 7 scored task types across Core's three parts (Pearson PTE Core test format pages, checked 10 Oct 2026), and 17 of those 19 have a practice page or set on this site. The two without one are Write Email and Listening Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers.

Use this page to see which Core task matches which practice page, where the limits differ, and how to spend four weeks. For the score chart and the CLB conversion, see the PTE Core guide.

Quick answer

  • Three parts: Speaking and Writing, Reading, Listening (Pearson PTE Core test format page, checked 10 Oct 2026).
  • Practise first: the shared tasks in the tables below. They cover the bulk of the test.
  • Not practisable here yet: Write Email (Core only) and Listening Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers.
  • UKVI: PTE Academic UKVI has the same content, format and scoring as PTE Academic, so use the Academic practice pages for it (Pearson PTE Academic UKVI page, checked 10 Oct 2026).

Pearson's pages do not state how many questions you get for each task type, so this guide gives none. Part 1 also starts with an unscored Personal Introduction (25 seconds to prepare, 30 seconds to record, per Pearson's Speaking and Writing page, checked 10 Oct 2026).

Part 1: Speaking and Writing tasks and where to practise

Practice pages here follow the Academic task rules. The last column says where the Core rule differs.

Core-only tasks, and what you cannot practise here yet

Write Email is the only task that Pearson's Core pages list that Academic does not have. You get 9 minutes, a prompt of up to 100 words, and you write between 80 and 120 words (Pearson PTE Core Speaking and Writing page, checked 10 Oct 2026). One caution: the same page's scoring section mentions a range starting at 50 words, which does not match, so aim inside 80 to 120. We have no Write Email practice page yet. Until there is one:

  1. Write to a 9-minute timer.
  2. Count your words and stay inside 80 to 120.
  3. Cover every point in the prompt, with a greeting, a body and a sign-off.
  4. Keep the register right for the reader. A manager and a friend need different wording.

Listening Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers exists in Core (Pearson PTE Core Listening page, checked 10 Oct 2026), but our listening set covers only single-answer, fill-in and select-missing-word items. To prepare, use the Reading version of the same format in the reading set to learn the scoring habit, and practise it on Pearson's official preparation material.

Tasks you can skip for Core: Write Essay, Retell Lecture, Summarize Group Discussion and Highlight Correct Summary do not appear on Pearson's Core Speaking and Writing or Listening pages (checked 10 Oct 2026). For the Academic list, see the PTE exam pattern.

A 4-week PTE Core plan by skill

This plan is ours, not Pearson's. It uses the practice pages above, sets you a task type to focus on each week, and ends with a mixed week. Allow a few sessions a week for each skill and adjust to your level. Practice results are estimates for practice only. Do not turn them into a 10 to 90 score.

2: Core habitsDescribe Image and Answer Short QuestionWrite Email, timed to 9 minutes, 80 to 120 words, two draftsReorder ParagraphsListening Fill in the Blanks and Highlight Incorrect Words

Two rules help most. First, practise the Core limits, not the Academic limits, wherever the table above says they differ. Second, spend the last session of each week on your weakest skill, because IRCC looks at each skill separately for Canadian applications (see the PTE Core guide).

PTE Academic UKVI

PTE Academic UKVI has the same test content, format and scoring as PTE Academic, so the Academic practice pages and the PTE exam pattern apply to it. Checked 10 Oct 2026 on Pearson's PTE Academic UKVI page, which also says:

  • It is taken at an authorised PTE test centre, on a computer, and cannot be taken at home.
  • Your Score Report contains a SELT URN so the UK Government can verify your results. Pearson's page speaks of a Score Report, not a separate certificate.
  • Pearson describes it as an approved four-skill Secure English Language Test (SELT), and the UK government's SELT guidance lists "PTE Academic UKVI" under Pearson (GOV.UK, checked 10 Oct 2026).
  • A PTE Academic UKVI score is valid for two years from the test date (Pearson UKVI page and GOV.UK, both checked 10 Oct 2026).

Which test your visa needs is your decision to confirm on GOV.UK and with your sponsor or university. For the comparison with Academic and Core, see PTE Academic vs Core vs UKVI.

What this page does not cover

  • Score conversion: Pearson does not publish an overall Core to IELTS conversion that we use here, and we do not claim one.
  • Question counts: Pearson's Core pages do not state them, so none are given.
  • Questions: every practice item on this site is original. None is copied from a test, and none predicts a real question.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use PTE Academic practice for PTE Core?

Partly. Most Core task types also exist in Academic, so the skills carry over, and this site's practice pages cover them. Some limits differ, though: Core's Summarize Written Text is 25 to 50 words and its Summarize Spoken Text is 20 to 30 words, while the Academic versions use longer limits. Write Email exists only in Core. Checked 10 Oct 2026 on Pearson's Core and Academic test format pages.

Is there a Write Email practice page on this site?

Not yet. Write Email is a Core-only task: Pearson gives 9 minutes and a prompt of up to 100 words, and the how-to-answer text says to write between 80 and 120 words. Until we build a page, practise with a timer and a word counter, and cover every point in the prompt. Checked 10 Oct 2026 on Pearson's PTE Core Speaking and Writing page.

Does PTE Core have Write Essay or Retell Lecture?

No. Pearson's Core Speaking and Writing page lists seven scored question types and none of them is an essay, Retell Lecture or Summarize Group Discussion. Core Listening also does not list Highlight Correct Summary. You can skip those practice pages if you are only preparing for Core. Checked 10 Oct 2026.

Is PTE Academic UKVI harder than PTE Academic?

Pearson states that PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Academic have the same test content, format and scoring. The difference is the booking and the Score Report: UKVI is taken at an authorised test centre and the Score Report carries a SELT URN. Checked 10 Oct 2026 on Pearson's PTE Academic UKVI page.

Can I turn my practice result into a PTE Core score?

No. Practice results on this site are estimates marked for practice only. They are not 10 to 90 scores and they do not predict your Score Report. For Canada, IRCC also looks at each skill separately, so see the PTE Core guide for how the per-skill scores map to CLB levels.
