Editorial policyHow we check facts

For a UK visa, PTE Academic UKVI and IELTS for UKVI are both accepted, and the Home Office does not prefer one. Gov.uk says the choice is yours, as long as the test is on the approved list, is taken at an approved centre and is awarded within the two years before you apply. So the real decision is about route, availability, format and speed, not acceptance.

Checked 10 Oct 2026. Sources: gov.uk SELT guidance, Pearson UK visa table, Pearson PTE Academic UKVI and IELTS for UKVI.

This page compares the two tests. For the full list of routes and PTE scores, see PTE score for the UK. For the general comparison of the two exams, see PTE vs IELTS.

Side by side: what the official pages say

Both tests need the minimum in every skill, not just overall. A high total does not cover one weak skill.

Decision tree: UK visa needing a SELT leads to PTE Academic UKVI; Canada Express Entry leads to PTE Core; an Australian visa leads to PTE Academic; anything else means use the exact test your visa or university page names.
A starting-point guide to choosing between PTE Academic UKVI, PTE Core and PTE Academic. Always confirm on the official visa or university page. Text version of this diagram
  • Is it a UK visa route that requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT)? Yes: take PTE Academic UKVI (GOV.UK lists it as an approved SELT; its report carries a SELT URN). No: next question.
  • Is it Canada Express Entry? Yes: take PTE Core (IRCC says you must take the PTE Core option). No: next question.
  • Is it an Australian visa application? Yes: take PTE Academic (listed by Australia's Department of Home Affairs). No: next step.
  • Anything else: take the exact test your university or visa page names; Academic, UKVI and Core are different tests.

Which visa needs which level

The level depends on your route, not on the test. This table is from Pearson's visa table and the IELTS UKVI page (checked 10 Oct 2026). Pearson's two pages word the degree-level case differently, so ask your university which version it needs.

RouteCEFR levelPTEIELTS
Student, degree level or aboveB259+ per section; PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI depending on the institution5.5 per skill
Student, below degree level (foundation, pre-sessional)B143+ per section, PTE Academic UKVI4.0 per skill
Skilled Worker, new application and most switchesB259+ per section, PTE Academic UKVI5.5 per skill
Innovator Founder, Minister of ReligionB259+ per section, PTE Academic UKVI5.5 per skill
Partner, parent, settlement, citizenshipA1 to B1, speaking and listening onlyPTE Home (or a higher test, per Pearson)IELTS Life Skills

For family visas, Pearson adds that PTE Academic UKVI can also be used if you score at least A2 (30). Speaking and listening only routes are listed on gov.uk as citizenship, partner, parent, settlement, International Sportsperson and Representative of an Overseas Business.

Decision checklist: choose in five steps

  1. Fix your route and level. Use the table above. Degree-level study and Skilled Worker mean B2 (see UK student visa and UK Skilled Worker visa).
  2. Ask your university which test it accepts. For degree-level study, whether PTE Academic is enough or UKVI is needed depends on the institution's visa approval status, per Pearson. Get this in writing or from its English page.
  3. Look at the dates. Open both booking pages for your city and compare the earliest slots against your CAS or visa deadline. Pearson says results usually take two business days, so count that into your plan.
  4. Match the format to your strength. PTE is fully computer-based with integrated tasks. If speaking to a computer helps you, try PTE speaking practice. If you prefer a different style, IELTS may suit you better. Take one timed practice test of each before paying.
  5. Check fees last. Both fees vary by country, and Pearson's UKVI page gives the local price only after you pick a centre. See PTE exam fee.

Worked example

Asha applies for a masters at a UK university. The course is degree level, so the visa level is B2. Her target is 59+ in each PTE section, or 5.5 in each IELTS skill. The university says it accepts PTE Academic UKVI. She books it, because the result carries the URN the visa form needs.

She scores 64 overall but 56 in speaking. That fails the per-section minimum, so she needs a retake, even though 64 looks fine. Had she checked first, she would have practised speaking separately. Her 2-year validity clock runs from the test date, so she retakes early enough to still apply in time.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Booking the wrong version. A standard PTE Academic or IELTS Academic booking is not on gov.uk's approved SELT list, and gov.uk says your application may be refused without the SELT reference number. The one exception Pearson describes is degree-level study at some institutions, so confirm with yours.
  • Reading only the overall score. Each skill must meet the minimum.
  • Using a result older than two years. Gov.uk and Pearson both set a two-year limit.
  • Trusting a converter for a visa. Our PTE to IELTS converter and PTE score chart give a rough guide only. The visa uses the CEFR level on your official result.

What we could not confirm

IELTS for UKVI result timing and test-day format (paper or computer) were not stated on the official IELTS UKVI page we could open on 10 Oct 2026, so we have not given them. Check them on the booking page for your centre. Visa levels change, so confirm the route on gov.uk before you book.

Frequently asked questions

Is PTE or IELTS better for a UK visa?

Neither is better in the eyes of the Home Office. Gov.uk says it is for you to decide which approved test to take. PTE Academic UKVI and IELTS for UKVI both count, and both must be taken at an approved test location. Pick the one whose format suits you and whose slots you can get in time.

Can I use a normal PTE Academic or IELTS Academic result for a UK visa?

Not for most routes. Gov.uk asks for a Secure English Language Test (SELT), and the visa application needs the SELT reference number. Pearson says to book PTE Academic UKVI if you need the URN. For degree-level study, Pearson says the test can be PTE Academic or PTE Academic UKVI, depending on the institution's visa approval status, so ask your university first.

Which UK visas need a test, and what level?

Student visa at degree level and above needs B2. Student visa below degree level needs B1. Skilled Worker, Innovator Founder and Minister of Religion need B2. Pearson lists 59+ in each section on PTE and IELTS lists at least 5.5 in each skill for B2. Check the route page on gov.uk, as levels change.

How long is a UKVI test result valid?

Gov.uk says a SELT result is valid for 2 years from the date the test is awarded. Pearson says the same for PTE Academic UKVI, counted from the test date. Plan your visa filing so the result is still in date on the day you apply.

How fast do PTE Academic UKVI results come?

Pearson says results usually arrive within two business days, and in some cases up to five business days. We could not confirm IELTS for UKVI result timing from an official IELTS page on 10 Oct 2026, so check it with the test centre you plan to book.

Can I take either test at home for a UK visa?

No. Pearson says PTE Academic UKVI is taken only at authorised test centres, not at home. The IELTS page says UKVI accepts only IELTS tests taken in person at an official IELTS for UKVI test centre.
