Editorial policyHow we check facts

Short answer: the English requirement depends on the assessing body, not on a single Australian rule. Engineers Australia accepts PTE Academic at 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing and 54 speaking for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, and CPA Australia at 58, 59, 69 and 76. ACS and Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) say they do not require an English test for their skills assessments.

This page only lists what each body publishes about PTE. The Home Affairs levels used for visas and points are in our PTE score for Australia PR guide, and the nomination angle is in the 190 and 491 guide. Checked 2026-10-13.

What each body adds beyond the score

  • Engineers Australia: the guide says it only accepts scores from tests taken at a secure test centre, and the test must be taken within three years before lodging and stay valid for verification during the assessment. The guide also says you usually need no test if you hold a passport from the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, New Zealand or the Republic of Ireland, or graduated from a qualifying Australian course; exemptions need documentary evidence. Source: Engineers Australia guide. Checked 2026-10-13.
  • CPA Australia: the score report must show both the Score Report Code and Registration ID. Results are valid for three years from the test date, and the report must still be inside that period when the outcome is issued. Passport holders of Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States are listed as exempt, and "at-home" or "online" tests cannot be accepted. The Accounting Professional Year Program is listed as an alternative to a test. Source: CPA Australia. Checked 2026-10-13.
  • ACS: "No. ACS does not require any English language tests for skills assessments." Source: ACS. Checked 2026-10-13.
  • TRA: "An English language test is not required for the MSA Program." This is the TRA Migration Skills Assessment program only; other TRA programs have their own pages. Source: TRA MSA FAQs. Checked 2026-10-13.
  • VETASSESS: the document requirements page we read talks about translations of non-English documents and does not state a PTE score. That is not proof that no test is ever needed, so check your occupation's information sheet on the VETASSESS site.

Worked example: one test, two bodies

You sit PTE Academic on 20 October 2026 and score 60 listening, 62 reading, 66 writing and 78 speaking.

CheckRequired (L / R / W / S)Your resultOutcome
Engineers Australia47 / 48 / 51 / 5460 / 62 / 66 / 78Meets all four
CPA Australia58 / 59 / 69 / 7660 / 62 / 66 / 78Writing 66 is below 69, so not met

Same test, different outcome: an engineer is covered, an accountant must lift writing by 3 points or use another route the body lists, such as an accepted test or the Professional Year Program. The figures are from the table above and the arithmetic is ours.

Checklist before you book

  1. Find your occupation's assessing body, then open its official English page above rather than relying on a visa page.
  2. Compare your four skills to the figure for your test date. The cut-off is the date you sat the test, 6 August 2025 versus 7 August 2025.
  3. Book a secure test centre. CPA Australia says online tests cannot be accepted, and Engineers Australia says secure test centre only. Our booking guide covers centres.
  4. Keep the Score Report Code and Registration ID from your PTE report; CPA Australia cannot verify scores without the code.
  5. Check validity: Engineers Australia wants the test within three years before you lodge, while CPA Australia wants it inside three years from the test date when the outcome is issued. See PTE score validity.
  6. Then check the visa English level separately: PR levels. Our eligibility checker can compare your section scores with the figures.

CA ANZ's page blocked our fetch on 2026-10-13, so we give no CA ANZ figure; read it directly before you apply. We did not check Engineers Australia's occupation-specific rules, or other assessing bodies such as Australian nursing or teaching authorities. Bodies revise requirements without notice, so open the linked page on the day you lodge.

Frequently asked questions

What PTE score does Engineers Australia need for a skills assessment?

Engineers Australia accepts PTE Academic. Its January 2026 guide lists 47 listening, 48 reading, 51 writing and 54 speaking for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025, and 50 in each skill for tests on or before 6 August 2025. The test must be taken at a secure test centre and within three years before you lodge. Checked 2026-10-13.

Does CPA Australia accept PTE Academic, and at what score?

Yes. For a test completed on or after 7 August 2025, CPA Australia lists 58 listening, 59 reading, 69 writing and 76 speaking for the qualification assessment. For tests on or before 6 August 2025 it lists 65 in each skill. At-home or online tests cannot be accepted. Checked 2026-10-13.

Does ACS need an English test for a skills assessment?

ACS says on its applicant information page that it does not ask for an English test as part of a skills assessment. That is separate from your visa, where Home Affairs may still ask for English evidence, so read the visa page for your subclass. Checked 2026-10-13.

Is the PTE score for the skills assessment the same as for the visa?

Not necessarily. Each assessing body sets its own rule. Engineers Australia's figures match the Home Affairs Competent English figures for tests from 7 August 2025, while CPA Australia's match the Proficient figures. Pass the assessment's figure and the visa's figure separately, in all four skills, from a valid test.

Can one PTE result serve both the assessment and the visa?

Often yes, if it is a secure-test-centre result inside the validity window of each body and meets the higher of the two sets of figures. Check the test date on your score report against each page, and confirm the visa side in our PR guide before you book.
