IELTS conversion uses Pearson's July 2025 PTE Academic and IELTS Academic concordance, checked on 2026-10-09. Australian thresholds are from the Department of Home Affairs, checked the same day. Institutions set their own requirements.
How the PTE score calculator works
- Open your PTE Academic score report and copy the overall score and the four skill scores.
- Enter them in the calculator. Each score must be between 10 and 90.
- Read the IELTS band for the overall score and each skill. Each skill has its own band.
- Check the Australian levels. If your test was taken on or before 6 August 2025, switch on the older thresholds.
- Compare the result with the minimum your university or visa route asks for, on that body's own page.

Australian English levels: PTE minimums
Home Affairs sets one minimum for each component of the test (or one overall minimum for Functional English). The table shows the current minimums for PTE Academic taken on or after 7 August 2025, and the older minimums for tests taken before that date.

Why skill scores matter more than the overall score
Many universities and visa routes set a minimum for every skill, not just the overall score. The skill conversions do not match, so a single overall figure can hide a gap. For example, IELTS 7.0 is PTE 63–70 overall, but only PTE 58–63 in Listening and PTE 76–82 in Speaking. A candidate can reach the overall range and still miss a Speaking minimum that sits higher on the PTE scale.

- It does not reproduce Pearson's AI scoring or re-score any answer.
- It does not calculate your overall PTE score from your skill scores.
- It does not cover PTE Core, which is a separate test with its own scoring.
- It does not check university, country or visa requirements beyond Australia.
Reading the result
The IELTS band is an estimate from Pearson's concordance study, which compares groups of test takers. It is not a guarantee that you would get that band on an IELTS test. The Australian result is a check against the published minimums for each component. Home Affairs makes the final decision on your visa application.

What is a PTE score calculator?
A PTE score calculator takes your PTE Academic scores and shows the matching IELTS Academic band, then checks them against English requirements such as the Australian Home Affairs levels. This page uses Pearson's July 2025 PTE and IELTS concordance and the official Home Affairs thresholds. The result is an estimate, not a replica of Pearson's scoring.
How do I convert my PTE score to an IELTS band?
Read your overall score and your four skill scores from your PTE score report. Find each score in the 2025 concordance table on this page and read across to the IELTS band in the same row. Use the skill columns for each skill. The calculator above does this for you in one step.
What IELTS band is PTE 65?
In Pearson's 2025 concordance, an overall PTE Academic score of 63–70 matches IELTS Academic 7.0. A PTE overall of 65 therefore falls in the IELTS 7.0 range. Skill scores convert separately: a Speaking score of 65 matches IELTS 6.0, not 7.0.
Does the calculator work out my overall PTE score from my skill scores?
No. This tool does not calculate an overall score from your skill scores. Enter the overall score printed on your official PTE score report. The skill scores you enter are then converted and checked against each requirement.
What PTE score do I need for Australian Competent English?
Under the thresholds for PTE Academic taken on or after 7 August 2025, Competent English needs 47 for listening, 48 for reading, 54 for speaking, 51 for writing. Proficient English needs 58 for listening, 59 for reading, 76 for speaking, 69 for writing. Every component must meet its minimum, so a strong overall score does not make up for a weak skill.
Why are Speaking and Writing conversions higher than Listening and Reading?
The two tests do not score each skill on the same scale, so Pearson's concordance gives a separate PTE range for each skill. For example, IELTS 7.0 covers PTE 58–63 for Listening but 76–82 for Speaking. Always read the column for the skill you are checking.

Does this calculator cover PTE Core or PTE Academic UKVI?
The IELTS conversion is for PTE Academic. PTE Core is a different test with its own scoring, so it is not covered here. The Australian thresholds on this page are the Home Affairs figures for PTE Academic. Check your visa or university guidance for any other test.
