The PTE Academic exam lasts about 2 hours and has three parts, listed by Pearson as Speaking & Writing, then Reading, then Listening. Pearson's test-day page says you need two hours for PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI or PTE Core, and you must arrive 30 minutes before your appointment to check in. Checked 10 Oct 2026.
PTE exam duration by part
| Part | Duration | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Part 1: Speaking & Writing | 76 to 84 minutes | Pearson, Speaking & Writing |
| Part 2: Reading | 23 to 30 minutes | Pearson, Reading |
| Part 3: Listening | 31 to 39 minutes | Pearson, Listening |
| Whole test | Two hours | Pearson, on test day |
Checked 10 Oct 2026. Pearson gives each part as a range and gives one total, "approximately 2 hours", so use that for planning. For the full list of question types and scoring, see the PTE exam pattern guide.
Text version of this diagram
- Part 1, Speaking & Writing: 76–84 minutes, 9 question types (a Personal Introduction comes first and is not scored).
- Part 2, Reading: 23–30 minutes, 5 question types.
- Part 3, Listening: 31–39 minutes, 8 question types.
- Pearson says the test takes about two hours; arrive 30 minutes before your appointment to check in. The part ranges do not add up to the total because test versions are balanced for length.

Part 3: Listening (source): Summarize Spoken Text (10 minutes), Multiple Choice Multiple Answers, Fill in the Blanks (Type In), Highlight Correct Summary, Multiple Choice Single Answer, Select Missing Word, Highlight Incorrect Words, Write from Dictation. Pearson lists audio lengths for these but no separate answer time except for Summarize Spoken Text.
What changed in 2025
For tests taken after 7 August 2025, Pearson added Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation to Part 1 of PTE Academic and PTE Academic UKVI. Its update page says the test "remains approximately 2 hours" and that the time limit for each existing question is unchanged (Pearson 2025 updates, checked 10 Oct 2026). Details are in our PTE new format changes guide.
Check-in at the test centre
From Pearson's test-day page, checked 10 Oct 2026:
- Arrive half an hour before your test to check in and pass security.
- The administrator explains the test rules and procedures and asks you to review and agree to the Test Taker Agreement before the test begins.
- Your ID is checked against your booking details. Pearson says you need a valid passport and cannot test without it.
- A digital photo, a signature and a palm scan are taken.
- You store all personal items in a locker.
- Security checks follow. They may include emptying your pockets, rolling up your sleeves or a handheld wand check.
Pearson's page does not say how long check-in takes, so we do not give a figure. To find a centre near you, see PTE exam centres in India.
Breaks
We found no scheduled break described on the Pearson pages listed in the sources above. The test-day page only says the test takes two hours. Treat the test as one continuous sitting, and ask the centre administrator about break rules before you begin. We have left out any break length because we cannot confirm one.
Test-day planner: how long should you block off?
This table is our own planning aid, not a Pearson schedule. It adds the confirmed 30-minute arrival to Pearson's two-hour test length. Check-in time after you arrive is not published, so it is left as a buffer.
| Step | Time to block | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Arrive at centre | 30 minutes before appointment | Pearson |
| Extra buffer for travel and queue | 30 to 60 minutes (your choice) | Our suggestion, not an official figure |
| Test | 2 hours | Pearson |
| Total to keep free | About 3 to 3.5 hours | Sum of the above |
Checked 10 Oct 2026. Two points follow from the part timings. Summarize Written Text and Write Essay alone use 30 fixed minutes of Part 1, so the remaining 46 to 54 minutes of that part go to the seven other task types plus the Personal Introduction. Practise the writing tasks with a real timer, and use the PTE mock test to rehearse the full two-hour sitting. Your results come after the test; see PTE result for timing and what the score report shows.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the PTE exam?
Pearson says the test lasts two hours for PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Core. The three parts add up to 130 to 153 minutes on paper (76-84, 23-30 and 31-39), but Pearson's own summary is 'approximately 2 hours', so plan for a long sitting and do not rely on the lower end of each range.
In what order are the PTE tasks?
Pearson numbers the parts in this order: Part 1 Speaking & Writing, Part 2 Reading, Part 3 Listening. Its pages do not state a required sequence in words, so treat this as the listed order. Inside Part 1, the unscored Personal Introduction comes first, then the speaking tasks, then Summarize Written Text and Write Essay at the end.
Is there a break in the PTE exam?
We could not confirm a scheduled break on any Pearson page we read. Pearson's test-day page gives the test length as two hours and does not describe a break. Ask your test centre administrator about break rules before you start, and do not assume you can pause the clock.
When should I reach the PTE test centre?
Pearson says to arrive 30 minutes before your test to check in and pass security. Bring valid passport ID that matches your booking. Pearson's page gives no figure for check-in length, so leave yourself extra time.
Did the 2025 update make the PTE test longer or shorter?
No. For tests after 7 August 2025, Pearson added Summarize Group Discussion and Respond to a Situation. Its update page says the total duration remains approximately 2 hours and that the time limit for each existing question did not change.
