Editorial policyHow we check facts

Short answer: Irish immigration lists PTE Academic 30 as the minimum for a study visa, for every course type on its table. That is a visa figure only. Your university or college sets its own English requirement, and it can be higher, so the score you actually need is the higher of the two.

The rules below come from Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) pages. Checked 2026-10-13. The ISD English requirements page says it was last updated on 16 September 2024, so re-read it before you book.

What the visa rule says

ISD states that the table covers immigration purposes only and that each student must also meet the language requirements of the college. PTE Academic is one of several tests on the table; ISD also lists IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo and others, each with its own scale. Do not carry a PTE number across to another test by guesswork. If you compare tests, use the PTE to IELTS converter for an estimate only.

How Stamp 2 and English courses fit in

Stamp 2 is the immigration permission students register for after they arrive. Two points matter for your English plan, both from ISD's study options page (checked 2026-10-13):

  • For a higher education or English language programme longer than three months, a non-EEA student must choose a programme on ISD's Interim List of Eligible Programmes (ILEP). Listed types include English language programmes of at least 25 weeks, higher education programmes and foundation programmes.
  • An English language programme on the ILEP can give a Stamp 2 of up to eight months, with at least 15 class hours a week. You may study English courses for a maximum of three permissions of eight months, two years in total, and then must move to a higher education programme to stay as a student. ISD's student permission page adds that English students need at least 85% attendance and must sit a recognised exam at the end of each programme.

So a PTE result is evidence for the visa application, while an English language course applicant does not have to supply test evidence. If your score is low, a preparatory English course before the main course is another route. ISD says a preparatory English course must not exceed 6 months and needs a study plan plus fees paid for both that course and the first year of the main course.

What universities ask

ISD says higher education providers set their own admission requirements, including the standard of English. There is no national university score. Each university and often each programme publishes its own figure, sometimes with minimum scores per skill. Our Ireland university pages collect those figures with a source link for each; use them, then confirm on the university's admissions page before you book. Browse all countries from universities.

Worked example: choosing a test date

A student plans to start a masters in September 2027 and applies for the visa in May 2027.

  1. The certificate must be issued within 2 years of the expected start date, so a result dated after September 2025 would meet that rule on the ISD wording.
  2. The visa minimum is 30, but the university asks for a higher overall score and possibly per-skill scores. The student must reach the university figure, since it is the higher requirement.
  3. The student takes the test with enough time to retake before the application deadline, and keeps the score report for both the university and the visa file.

Replace the university figure with the one from your course page. We do not state it here because it differs by institution.

Checklist before you book

  1. Find your course on the ILEP and note the provider.
  2. Read the English requirement on the course page; write down the overall and any per-skill score.
  3. Compare it with the visa figure of 30 and keep the higher number as your target.
  4. Count back 2 years from the course start date to confirm your result will be in date.
  5. If you are short, ask the college whether it offers a preparatory English course, and read ISD's extra rules for those courses above.
  6. Test your readiness with the PTE eligibility checker and see how long scores stay valid.

For the same question in other countries, see the UK guide and the country index. Germany is covered in PTE in Germany.

Frequently asked questions

What PTE score is needed for an Ireland study visa?

Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) lists PTE Academic 30 as the minimum for study visas, both for second-level, foundation and preparatory English courses and for all other courses. The page says this is a visa minimum only. Your college may ask for more, so read its own English requirement as well.

Is PTE accepted in Ireland for a masters?

PTE Academic is on the ISD list of tests for visa purposes, and a masters falls under all other courses, where the visa figure is 30. Universities set their own entry scores, which can be higher than the visa figure. Open the Ireland university pages on this site, then confirm on the university's own admissions page.

Do I need an English test for an English language course in Ireland?

ISD says English language course applicants are not required to provide evidence from a test provider when applying, but a Visa Officer may ask for alternative evidence of a basic level of English. Keep a recent test result or school record ready in case you are asked.

How long is a PTE result valid for an Irish visa?

ISD says the certificate must have been issued within 2 years of the expected start date of your course. Count back from your course start date, not from the date you apply, when you plan your test booking.

Does Ireland accept online English tests for a study visa?

The ISD page says that, because of problems accessing supervised tests during Covid-19, it will also accept results of online tests from the test providers. That is Covid-era wording and the page was last updated on 16 September 2024, so confirm the current position with ISD, and check that your college accepts the same test format, before you choose an online option.
