PTE is accepted in 72 countries on Pearson's own list, but acceptance depends on the purpose. Four governments publish official PTE visa rules: Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United Kingdom. Each one names a specific test, such as PTE Academic, PTE Core or PTE Academic UKVI. For study, the university sets the score. Use the table below to find the right test for your visa, then open the country page for the current minimum score.

How many countries accept PTE?
Pearson's country list shows 72 countries, counting Cyprus once even though the list shows the north and south separately. Pearson also says PTE Academic is recognised for thousands of academic programmes in more than 70 countries. Other websites quote larger totals. We could not verify those figures on official sources, so this page does not use them.
Which countries accept PTE for a study visa?
- Australia: Home Affairs accepts PTE Academic as evidence of competent English for visa purposes. Check the visa subclass and the test date. See PTE score for Australia and PTE score for an Australian student visa.
- United Kingdom: The Home Office accepts PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home as approved secure English tests. A standard PTE Academic result is a different test. Read the PTE score for the UK page before you book.
- Canada: The IRCC page we checked covers Express Entry permanent residence, not study. For a college place, the institution sets the accepted tests and minimum scores. See PTE score for Canada.
- United States: Pearson states that PTE is widely accepted by US universities and colleges. There is no government visa test score, so each school sets its own minimum. See PTE score for the USA.
- Germany and Europe: Pearson lists Germany among its accepting countries. Universities and embassies set their own rules. See PTE accepted in Germany.
Which countries accept PTE for work or immigration?
| Country | Route | What the official page says |
|---|---|---|
| Australia | Work and migration visas | Competent English under the Home Affairs table. The minimum per skill depends on the test date, so see PTE score for Australia PR. |
| New Zealand | Skilled residence | PTE Academic overall score of 58 or more for the principal applicant, and 36 or more for a partner or dependent child. The result must be no more than 2 years old. See PTE score for New Zealand. |
| Canada | Express Entry permanent residence | PTE Core, converted to a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level for each skill. See PTE score for Canada. |
| United Kingdom | Skilled Worker and settlement | An approved secure English language test at the CEFR level the visa requires. See the PTE Academic and UKVI guide. |
Which PTE test does each country want?
Pearson describes its tests by purpose, and the government pages above match it. Booking the wrong version is the most common avoidable mistake.
| PTE test | Pearson's stated use | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|
| PTE Academic | Global study, Australian and New Zealand visa applications, professional registration | Study abroad, Australia, New Zealand |
| PTE Core | Canadian permanent residence and citizenship (IRCC) | Canada Express Entry |
| PTE Academic UKVI | Four-skill test for UK work visas and below-degree study | UK Skilled Worker and similar routes |
| PTE Home (A1, A2, B1) | Two-skill tests for joining family, visa extensions or citizenship in the UK | UK family and settlement routes |
Text version of this diagram
- Is it a UK visa route that requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT)? Yes: take PTE Academic UKVI (GOV.UK lists it as an approved SELT; its report carries a SELT URN). No: next question.
- Is it Canada Express Entry? Yes: take PTE Core (IRCC says you must take the PTE Core option). No: next question.
- Is it an Australian visa application? Yes: take PTE Academic (listed by Australia's Department of Home Affairs). No: next step.
- Anything else: take the exact test your university or visa page names; Academic, UKVI and Core are different tests.

What about a "5.5" PTE score?
A 5.5 is an IELTS band score. No government sets a PTE score of 5.5. Visas and universities set PTE minimums in PTE terms, for example an overall score of 58 for New Zealand skilled residence. To estimate how a PTE result compares with an IELTS band, use the PTE to IELTS converter. The converter gives an estimate only, not an official equivalent.
Before you book: a four-step check
- Find the visa or university page that names the test. Note whether it says PTE Academic, PTE Core or PTE Academic UKVI.
- Check the score per skill, not just the overall total. Canada and Australia set minimums for each skill.
- Check the validity date. New Zealand requires a result no more than 2 years old at the time you apply. Australia's Home Affairs page allows certain older results for up to 3 years, depending on the visa.
- Compare your practice scores with the official minimum. Our PTE passing score guide explains what a passing score means for each purpose.
