What changed in the 2025 concordance
Until 2025, Pearson published only an overall conversion between PTE Academic and IELTS Academic. The July 2025 study used 1,522 test takers from India, China, Australia and the United Kingdom, and kept the overall figures consistent with its earlier studies. It also added a separate table for Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing.
That matters if you are comparing older articles. Some older guides still quote the 2020 overall figures and no skill figures at all, so check the date before you rely on a table.
Why your skill scores matter more than your overall
Many universities and visa routes set a minimum for everyskill as well as overall. The skill ranges differ a lot. Take IELTS 7.0 in every band: that is PTE Listening 58–63 and Reading 59–64, but Speaking 76–82 and Writing 69–76. If you only aim for “65 in everything”, your Speaking can fall short of a 7.0 equivalent.
Which PTE test does this apply to?
The table is for PTE Academic. PTE Core is a separate test and is not covered here. Pearson's July 2025 paper compares PTE Academic with IELTS Academic only, so do not assume the same table applies to UKVI or Core without checking Pearson's own guidance.
Lowest PTE score that matches each IELTS band in all four skills
If a university asks for, say, IELTS 7.0 in every skill, you need the bottom of each skill range, not the overall figure. These minimums come straight from the table above.

Each figure is the bottom of Pearson's range for that skill. A score inside the range maps to that band, and a higher score may map to the next band up.
How to convert your score step by step
- Write down your overall score and your four skill scores from your official score report.
- Find the overall range in the table. Read the IELTS band in the same row.
- Repeat for each skill. Use the skill columns, not the overall column.
- Compare the result with the minimum your university or visa route asks for, and check that minimum on its official page.

- PTE 50 in IELTS: about 6.0 (overall range 47–54)
- PTE 58 in IELTS: about 6.5 (overall range 55–62)

In Pearson's July 2025 concordance, IELTS Academic 7.0 corresponds to a PTE Academic overall score of 63–70. Per skill it is Listening 58–63, Reading 59–64, Speaking 76–82 and Writing 69–76.
What PTE score equals IELTS 6.5?
IELTS 6.5 overall corresponds to PTE Academic 55–62 overall. Per skill it is Listening 53–57, Reading 54–58, Speaking 66–75 and Writing 60–68.
Is PTE 65 equal to IELTS 7?
Yes, for the overall score. PTE 65 falls in the 63–70 range, which Pearson lines up with IELTS 7.0. Skill scores need checking separately: a Speaking score of 65 falls in the IELTS 6.0 range (54–65), not 7.0.

Why are the Speaking and Writing ranges higher than Listening and Reading?
Pearson uses equipercentile equating, which matches scores reached by a similar share of test takers. Very few IELTS test takers score 9 in Speaking or Writing, so the PTE scores that line up with high IELTS bands in those skills sit higher on the PTE scale.
Did the 2025 concordance change the overall conversion?
Only slightly. Pearson reports that the 2025 overall figures remain consistent with its 2011 and 2020 studies. What is new in 2025 is a separate concordance for each of the four skills.
