PTE Academic scores run from 10 to 90. Pearson's July 2025 study matches each overall score to an IELTS band: for example, an overall PTE score of 63–70 corresponds to IELTS 7.0, and 55–62 to IELTS 6.5. The table below gives the per-skill matches too. These are estimates; check the score your university or visa requires.

How to read the chart
- Overall and skill scores are separate. The overall PTE score is not an average of the four skills, so the Overall column and the skill columns can point to different IELTS bands.
- IELTS 9.0 has no Speaking or Writing row. Pearson publishes skill-level equivalents only up to the bands shown in the table.
- Below IELTS 4.5, there is no published band. The table starts at PTE overall 24–30.
- Each row is an estimate.Pearson states that predicting one test's score from another carries measurement error, so treat the band as a guide rather than a guaranteed result.

What PTE score do universities want?
Pearson lists typical minimum overall scores for institutions as follows. Each university sets its own rule, so check your course page before you book.

PTE scores for Australian visas
Australia's Department of Home Affairs sets English levels for each visa. Thresholds for tests taken on or after 7 August 2025 are in the first column; earlier tests follow the second.

PTE Academic UKVI is one of the approved secure English language tests (SELTs) for UK visas. The English level you need depends on your visa route, so the PTE score you need is set by that route, not by this chart. Is the PTE to IELTS chart official?
The figures come from Pearson's own concordance study of PTE Academic and IELTS Academic, published in July 2025 and summarised in Pearson's score guide. Pearson itself notes that any prediction from one test to another carries measurement error. Universities and immigration departments set their own requirements, and those are the scores that count.
What PTE score do universities ask for?
Pearson's scoring page lists typical minimums of 36 to 50 for foundation courses, 51 to 60 for undergraduate degrees and 57 to 67 for postgraduate degrees. Each institution sets its own minimum, so check the course page you are applying to.
What PTE score is needed for an Australian visa?
It depends on the visa and the English level it asks for. Under the test taken from 7 August 2025, Competent English needs 47 listening, 48 reading, 54 speaking, 51 writing and Proficient English needs 58 listening, 59 reading, 76 speaking, 69 writing. Scores from tests taken before that date use different thresholds, which are listed in the Australia table above.
What does 'PTE score in bands' mean?
PTE scores are reported as a number from 10 to 90, for the overall result and for each skill. Most people asking about bands want the equivalent IELTS band (such as 6.5 or 7.0). The chart converts the PTE number into that band using Pearson's estimate.
Why are the Speaking and Writing ranges higher than Listening and Reading?
Pearson used equipercentile equating, which matches scores that sit at the same percentile on each test. Pearson notes that IELTS Academic has very few test takers at the top band in Speaking and Writing, so the IELTS score distribution differs by skill and the matching PTE scores differ too.
What is the lowest IELTS band in the chart?
The published table starts at IELTS 4.5, which corresponds to an overall PTE score of 24–30. The table has no row for lower PTE scores, so it does not give an IELTS equivalent below that.
Does this chart apply to PTE Core?
No. The table is built from PTE Academic. PTE Core is a separate test, so use our PTE Core guide for it rather than this table.
