IRCC does not set a PTE score for a Canada study permit. Your college or university sets the English requirement for admission, and many accept PTE Academic. The Student Direct Stream (SDS), which some older guides still mention, ended on 8 November 2024. Checked 10 Oct 2026 against canada.ca and Pearson.
What IRCC asks for, and what it does not
Per the IRCC study permit eligibility page, you must be enrolled at a designated learning institution, show enough money, have no criminal record (with a police certificate if required), be in good health (with a medical exam if required), and satisfy an officer that you will leave when the permit ends. A language test is not on that list. The page mentions language requirements only in connection with eligibility for the later post-graduation work permit. Checked 10 Oct 2026.
The IRCC documents page says a letter of acceptance from your school is always required. In most cases you also need a provincial or territorial attestation letter, which usually comes after you accept your offer and pay some or all of your tuition. Students going to Quebec need a CAQ instead. Checked 10 Oct 2026.
So your PTE result matters for one reason: a school will usually not issue the acceptance letter unless you meet its own English rule.
SDS history: what changed
IRCC's notice on the end of the Student Direct Stream says SDS and Nigeria Student Express ended at 2:00 p.m. ET on 8 November 2024. Eligible applications received before that time were still processed under those streams. Anything submitted after it goes through the regular study permit stream, where the notice says Guaranteed Investment Certificates are accepted as proof of funds. It also says every student must meet the normal study permit requirements. Checked 10 Oct 2026.
What this means for you: any guide that still shows an "SDS PTE score" is out of date. I did not find any announcement that SDS has come back.
I am not quoting old SDS score thresholds here, because I could not confirm them from a current official page.
PTE Academic or PTE Core: which one for study
| Your situation | Test to prepare for | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Applying to a Canadian college or university | PTE Academic, unless the school names another test | Pearson says Canadian universities and colleges recognise PTE Academic |
| Applying to IRCC for permanent residence or citizenship | PTE Core | Pearson says IRCC recognises PTE Core for these applications |
| Applying for a post-graduation work permit after study | Check IRCC's language-results page at that time | See PTE score for Canada |
Pearson's destination Canada page states that PTE Academic is recognised by 100% of Canadian universities and colleges, and that IRCC recognises PTE Core for permanent residence and citizenship. Treat the first claim as Pearson's statement, and still check your own school. Checked 10 Oct 2026. For the differences between the tests, read PTE Academic vs Core vs UKVI and the PTE Core guide.
Text version of this diagram
- Is it a UK visa route that requires a Secure English Language Test (SELT)? Yes: take PTE Academic UKVI (GOV.UK lists it as an approved SELT; its report carries a SELT URN). No: next question.
- Is it Canada Express Entry? Yes: take PTE Core (IRCC says you must take the PTE Core option). No: next question.
- Is it an Australian visa application? Yes: take PTE Academic (listed by Australia's Department of Home Affairs). No: next step.
- Anything else: take the exact test your university or visa page names; Academic, UKVI and Core are different tests.
Worked example: read a programme page before you book
This is a method, not real university data. Say a programme page says "PTE Academic 65 overall, no section below 60".
- Open your last mock result. Suppose it shows overall 66, speaking 58.
- The overall meets the rule, but speaking 58 is below the section minimum of 60, so you would not qualify.
- Spend your next two weeks on speaking tasks, then retake a mock. Use the speaking practice hub.
- Convert nothing to IELTS or CLB for admission. Use the school's own PTE number.
Practice-tool scores are estimates, not Pearson scores.
Pre-booking checklist
- The exact programme page, not the university's general page, is open and saved.
- You know whether it wants an overall score, per-skill scores, or both.
- You have checked if PTE Academic is named as accepted, and the score validity period if stated.
- You know how the school wants the score delivered, as set out on its admissions page.
- You have a plan for the attestation letter and the money proof, since the school English rule is only one gate.
- If PR is your longer plan, you know a separate PTE Core result will be needed later.

Frequently asked questions
Is PTE required for a Canada study permit?
Not by IRCC. The study permit eligibility page lists enrolment at a designated learning institution, proof of funds, a clean record, health, and showing you will leave when the permit ends. It does not list a language test. Your college or university usually asks for one as part of admission, and PTE Academic is one test many accept. Confirm on your programme page.
Does the Student Direct Stream still exist?
No. IRCC says the Student Direct Stream and Nigeria Student Express ended at 2:00 p.m. ET on 8 November 2024. Applications received after that go through the regular study permit stream. We did not find any announcement that it has returned, so treat agents who quote SDS score rules with caution. Checked 10 Oct 2026.
Which PTE test do I take for Canada study, Academic or Core?
For admission to a college or university, take PTE Academic unless the institution says otherwise. Pearson says anyone applying to IRCC for permanent residence or citizenship should choose PTE Core. If PR is your later plan, expect to need a separate PTE Core result. Checked 10 Oct 2026.
What PTE score do I need for a masters in Canada?
There is no Canada-wide figure. Each university and each programme sets its own overall score and often a minimum per skill. Read the English requirement on the exact programme page. If you want to work in Canada after a master's, IRCC's page says a post-graduation work permit application made on or after 1 November 2024 for a university programme needs CLB 7 in all four skills (CLB 5 for college programmes). See the PTE score for Canada page. Checked 10 Oct 2026.
Is PTE accepted by all Canadian universities?
Pearson says PTE Academic is recognised by 100% of Canadian universities and colleges. That is Pearson's claim, not a promise from each school, and a programme can still choose which tests it takes or set a different minimum. Check the admissions page of your institution before booking.
My agent quotes a PTE score for the Canada study visa. Is it official?
Only if it matches the English requirement on your institution's own page. IRCC publishes no PTE score for study permits. A number quoted from another student's offer, or from SDS days, may not apply to your course or intake.
