What is special about exactly 30

• PTE 30 is exactly the score needed for Australia Functional English, test before 7 Aug 2025 (overall 30).
• 30 is the first PTE score on Pearson's A2 band.

PTE 30 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own Pearson table. Listening and Reading convert lowest at IELTS 4.5, and Speaking and Writing convert highest at 5.0, a spread of 1 half-band. Speaking (5.0) and Writing (5.0) differ from the overall conversion of 4.5.

Australian English levels at PTE 30

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 30 in every skill the highest level is Functional English (test from 7 August 2025) or Functional English (earlier test). 30 lands on the same level whichever test version you sat. Next up is Vocational English: short in Listening (needs 33, +3) and Reading (needs 36, +6); already clear Speaking (24) and Writing (29).

Pearson maps PTE 30 to CEFR A2 (PTE 30–42). B1 starts at 43, 13 points higher.

Scores around 30

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 30. The second makes Speaking strong (38) and Listening weak (22), each 8 points from 30.

• Even profile (L 30, R 30, S 30, W 30): 4.5 + 4.5 + 5.0 + 5.0 = 19.0, divided by four is 4.75, which IELTS rounds to 5.0 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). The direct overall conversion of PTE 30 gives 4.5, so the two routes differ by 0.5: Pearson converts the overall and each skill with separate tables.
• Uneven profile (L 22, R 30, S 38, W 30): at least one skill falls below the lowest row Pearson publishes (IELTS 4.5), so the four bands cannot be averaged from this table.

1. Target Vocational English: Reading 36, 6 above 30. Moderate gap: take task types one at a time.
2. Start with Reading: Reading Fill in the Blanks and Re-order Paragraphs. All reading practice.
