PTE 31 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own Pearson table. Listening and Reading convert lowest at IELTS 4.5, and Speaking and Writing convert highest at 5.0, a spread of 1 half-band. Listening (4.5) and Reading (4.5) differ from the overall conversion of 5.0.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 31. The second makes Writing strong (39) and Reading weak (23), each 8 points from 31.

• Even profile (L 31, R 31, S 31, W 31): 4.5 + 4.5 + 5.0 + 5.0 = 19.0, divided by four is 4.75, which IELTS rounds to 5.0 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). That matches the direct overall conversion of 5.0.
• Uneven profile (L 31, R 23, S 31, W 39): at least one skill falls below the lowest row Pearson publishes (IELTS 4.5), so the four bands cannot be averaged from this table.
