What is special about exactly 69

• 69 is the first PTE score that reads as IELTS 8.0 in Listening.
• 69 is the last PTE score that still reads as IELTS 7.5 in Reading; 70 moves it to 8.0.
• 69 is the first PTE score that reads as IELTS 7.0 in Writing.

PTE 69 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own Pearson table. Speaking converts lowest at IELTS 6.5, and Listening converts highest at 8.0, a spread of 3 half-bands. Listening (8.0), Reading (7.5) and Speaking (6.5) differ from the overall conversion of 7.0.

Australian English levels at PTE 69

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 69 in every skill the highest level is Competent English (test from 7 August 2025) or Proficient English (earlier test). 69 did better on the old test (Proficient English) than it does on the new one (Competent English), because the new Speaking and Writing minimums sit above the old single figure. Next up is Proficient English: short in Speaking (needs 76, +7); already clear Listening (58), Reading (59) and Writing (69).

Pearson maps PTE 69 to CEFR B2 (PTE 59–75). C1 starts at 76, 7 points higher.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 69. The second makes Reading strong (77) and Writing weak (61), each 8 points from 69.

• Even profile (L 69, R 69, S 69, W 69): 8.0 + 7.5 + 6.5 + 7.0 = 29.0, divided by four is 7.25, which IELTS rounds to 7.5 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). The direct overall conversion of PTE 69 gives 7.0, so the two routes differ by 0.5: Pearson converts the overall and each skill with separate tables.
• Uneven profile (L 69, R 77, S 69, W 61): 8.0 + 8.5 + 6.5 + 6.5 = 29.5, divided by four is 7.375, which IELTS rounds to 7.5. Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
