What is special about exactly 74

• Australia Proficient English, test from 7 Aug 2025 needs 76 (L 58, R 59, W 69, S 76), so 74 is 2 points short.
• 74 is the last PTE score that still reads as IELTS 8.0 in Listening; 75 moves it to 8.5.
• 74 is the last PTE score that still reads as IELTS 8.0 in Reading; 75 moves it to 8.5.

PTE 74 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own Pearson table. Speaking converts lowest at IELTS 6.5, and Listening and Reading convert highest at 8.0, a spread of 3 half-bands. Listening (8.0), Reading (8.0), Speaking (6.5) and Writing (7.0) differ from the overall conversion of 7.5.

Australian English levels at PTE 74

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 74 in every skill the highest level is Competent English (test from 7 August 2025) or Proficient English (earlier test). 74 did better on the old test (Proficient English) than it does on the new one (Competent English), because the new Speaking and Writing minimums sit above the old single figure. Next up is Proficient English: short in Speaking (needs 76, +2); already clear Listening (58), Reading (59) and Writing (69).

Pearson maps PTE 74 to CEFR B2 (PTE 59–75). C1 starts at 76, 2 points higher.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 74. The second makes Speaking strong (82) and Listening weak (66), each 8 points from 74.

• Even profile (L 74, R 74, S 74, W 74): 8.0 + 8.0 + 6.5 + 7.0 = 29.5, divided by four is 7.375, which IELTS rounds to 7.5. That matches the direct overall conversion of 7.5.
• Uneven profile (L 66, R 74, S 82, W 74): 7.5 + 8.0 + 7.0 + 7.0 = 29.5, divided by four is 7.375, which IELTS rounds to 7.5. Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
