• 83 is the first PTE score that reads as IELTS 7.5 in Speaking.

PTE 83 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own Pearson table. Speaking and Writing convert lowest at IELTS 7.5, and Listening and Reading convert highest at 9.0, a spread of 3 half-bands. Listening (9.0), Reading (9.0), Speaking (7.5) and Writing (7.5) differ from the overall conversion of 8.0.

Australian English levels at PTE 83

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 83 in every skill the highest level is Proficient English (test from 7 August 2025) or Superior English (earlier test). 83 did better on the old test (Superior English) than it does on the new one (Proficient English), because the new Speaking and Writing minimums sit above the old single figure. Next up is Superior English: short in Speaking (needs 88, +5) and Writing (needs 85, +2); already clear Listening (69) and Reading (70).

UK, New Zealand and Canada at PTE 83

Pearson maps PTE 83 to CEFR C1 (PTE 76–84). C2 starts at 85, 2 points higher.

Scores around 83

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 83. The second makes Writing strong (90) and Reading weak (75), each 8 points from 83.

• Even profile (L 83, R 83, S 83, W 83): 9.0 + 9.0 + 7.5 + 7.5 = 33.0, divided by four is 8.25, which IELTS rounds to 8.5 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). The direct overall conversion of PTE 83 gives 8.0, so the two routes differ by 0.5: Pearson converts the overall and each skill with separate tables.
• Uneven profile (L 83, R 75, S 83, W 90): 9.0 + 8.5 + 7.5 + 8.5 = 33.5, divided by four is 8.375, which IELTS rounds to 8.5. Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
