PTE 86 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own Pearson table. Speaking converts lowest at IELTS 7.5, and Listening and Reading convert highest at 9.0, a spread of 3 half-bands. Listening (9.0), Reading (9.0), Speaking (7.5) and Writing (8.0) differ from the overall conversion of 8.5.

Australian English levels at PTE 86

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 86 in every skill the highest level is Proficient English (test from 7 August 2025) or Superior English (earlier test). 86 did better on the old test (Superior English) than it does on the new one (Proficient English), because the new Speaking and Writing minimums sit above the old single figure. Next up is Superior English: short in Speaking (needs 88, +2); already clear Listening (69), Reading (70) and Writing (85).

UK, New Zealand and Canada at PTE 86

Pearson maps PTE 86 to CEFR C2 (PTE 85–90). C2 is the top band.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 86. The second makes Speaking strong (90) and Listening weak (78), each 8 points from 86.

• Even profile (L 86, R 86, S 86, W 86): 9.0 + 9.0 + 7.5 + 8.0 = 33.5, divided by four is 8.375, which IELTS rounds to 8.5. That matches the direct overall conversion of 8.5.
• Uneven profile (L 78, R 86, S 90, W 86): 8.5 + 9.0 + 8.5 + 8.0 = 34.0, divided by four is 8.50, which IELTS rounds to 8.5. Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
