• PTE 50 is exactly the score needed for Australia Competent English, test before 7 Aug 2025 (L 50, R 50, W 50, S 50).
• PTE 50 is exactly the score needed for University of Waikato: undergraduate degrees (general row) (overall 50, no section below 42).
• Victoria University (Australia): bachelor degrees needs 52 (overall 52, no section below 52), so 50 is 2 points short.

PTE 50 as an IELTS band in each skill

Australian English levels at PTE 50

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 50 in every skill the highest level is Vocational English (test from 7 August 2025) or Competent English (earlier test). 50 did better on the old test (Competent English) than it does on the new one (Vocational English), because the new Speaking and Writing minimums sit above the old single figure. Next up is Competent English: short in Speaking (needs 54, +4) and Writing (needs 51, +1); already clear Listening (47) and Reading (48).

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 50. The second makes Speaking strong (58) and Listening weak (42), each 8 points from 50.

• Even profile (L 50, R 50, S 50, W 50): 6.0 + 6.0 + 5.5 + 5.5 = 23.0, divided by four is 5.75, which IELTS rounds to 6.0 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). That matches the direct overall conversion of 6.0.
• Uneven profile (L 42, R 50, S 58, W 50): 5.5 + 6.0 + 6.0 + 5.5 = 23.0, divided by four is 5.75, which IELTS rounds to 6.0 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
