PTE Map Practice and Template

A PTE map question in Describe Image shows the same place in two versions, usually before and after a change, such as a town centre or a school campus. You get 25 seconds to study it and 40 seconds to speak. Introduce the two maps, describe the most obvious change, say what stayed the same, and use directions or reference points such as “to the north” or “along the river”. Finish with an overall impression of how the place has changed.

Question 1 of 33

Town centre, 2010 and 2025

How should we check your answer?

Charts use invented figures written for practice. Your recording is never uploaded. The result is a practice estimate from an optional transcript (on-device in most recent browsers, or the browser's own in Chrome and Edge) or from key points you tick yourself. It is not an official score.

How to describe a map in 40 seconds

  1. Introduce: The two maps show [place] in [time 1] and [time 2].
  2. Biggest change: The most noticeable change is [change], as [feature] has been [replaced / moved / extended].
  3. Unchanged features: [Feature] has stayed the same, and [feature] is still [where it was].
  4. New features: The new [feature] is located [direction / beside / opposite] the [landmark].
  5. Overall: Overall, the [place] has become [description], with [trade-off].

Use the 25 seconds to find the title, the labels and the main values, then speak in the order above. Replace each bracket with the details from your image.

Useful language

  • Position: in the north-west corner, along the river, opposite the, adjacent to, in the centre
  • Change: has been replaced by, was relocated to, has been extended, was removed to make way for
  • Overall: more built up, greener, more compact

Common mistakes

  • Describing only the second map. Compare the two.
  • Naming things you can't read. Use general terms such as “the building” when a label is unclear.
  • Forgetting directions. Use the river or the main road as reference points.
  • Listing every feature. Choose the change, the constants and one or two new features.

How Pearson scores Describe Image

  • Pearson gives 25 seconds to study the image and prepare, then 40 seconds to speak after the tone. You can record only once.
  • Responses are scored on three factors: content, pronunciation and oral fluency.
  • Content checks whether you address all the elements of the image, and also credits relationships in the data, possible developments, and conclusions or implications drawn from details in the image.
  • Pearson says a few disjointed ideas will lower your score, so cover the main information and link it to specific details.
  • Pearson says unoriginal responses earn no credit. Use a structure to organise your answer, but write the content from what you see in the picture.

How this task is scored (practice estimate)

After you record, the page can give a practice estimate for this map answer. It is not a Pearson score. With a transcript on (on-device in most recent browsers, browser-based in Chrome and Edge only), the content part checks whether the transcript mentions each key point of the chart (a few keywords per point), and a rough pace estimate lowers the percentage a little. With the transcript off, you tick the key points you covered and the result is labelled self-checked, with no pace part. Pronunciation is never measured, and keyword matching cannot judge whether your description is accurate or well organised. Results stay in this browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I describe a map in PTE Describe Image?

Introduce the two versions, describe the most obvious change, say what stayed the same, add the new features with directions or reference points, then give an overall impression. Keep the comparison between the two maps central.

What if the map has no compass points?

Use relative positions such as “next to”, “opposite”, “between” and “closer to the river”. Pick one reference point and build the rest of your description from it.

Is a map a common Describe Image type?

Pearson's official page describes the task only as an image and does not list picture types. The types on this site are for practice coverage, not a prediction of what you will see. Maps are a common kind of diagram, so a simple structure for them is worth learning.

Should I describe the whole map or just the changes?

Lead with the changes, since they carry the main information, then briefly note what stayed the same. A short mention of unchanged features shows you read both maps.

Keep practising
