• New Zealand: Skilled residence visa, principal applicant needs 58 (overall 58), so 57 is 1 point short.
• University of Waikato: most postgraduate programmes and BNurs nursing needs 58 (overall 58, no section below 50), so 57 is 1 point short.
• UK visa CEFR B2: Student visa at degree level or above, and new Skilled Worker applications needs 59 (59 in each skill), so 57 is 2 points short.
• 57 is the last PTE score that still reads as IELTS 6.5 in Listening; 58 moves it to 7.0.

PTE 57 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. Pearson maps PTE 57 to CEFR B1 (PTE 43–58). B2 starts at 59, 2 points higher.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 57. The second makes Reading strong (65) and Writing weak (49), each 8 points from 57.

• Even profile (L 57, R 57, S 57, W 57): 6.5 + 6.5 + 6.0 + 6.0 = 25.0, divided by four is 6.25, which IELTS rounds to 6.5 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). That matches the direct overall conversion of 6.5.
• Uneven profile (L 57, R 65, S 57, W 49): 6.5 + 7.5 + 6.0 + 5.5 = 25.5, divided by four is 6.375, which IELTS rounds to 6.5. Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
