What is special about exactly 52

• PTE 52 is exactly the score needed for Victoria University (Australia): bachelor degrees (overall 52, no section below 52).
• Australia Competent English, test from 7 Aug 2025 needs 54 (L 47, R 48, W 51, S 54), so 52 is 2 points short.
• 52 is the last PTE score that still reads as IELTS 6.0 in Listening; 53 moves it to 6.5.

Australian English levels at PTE 52

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 52 in every skill the highest level is Vocational English (test from 7 August 2025) or Competent English (earlier test). 52 did better on the old test (Competent English) than it does on the new one (Vocational English), because the new Speaking and Writing minimums sit above the old single figure. Next up is Competent English: short in Speaking (needs 54, +2); already clear Listening (47), Reading (48) and Writing (51).

Pearson maps PTE 52 to CEFR B1 (PTE 43–58). B2 starts at 59, 7 points higher.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 52. The second makes Listening strong (60) and Speaking weak (44), each 8 points from 52.

• Even profile (L 52, R 52, S 52, W 52): 6.0 + 6.0 + 5.5 + 6.0 = 23.5, divided by four is 5.875, which IELTS rounds to 6.0. That matches the direct overall conversion of 6.0.
• Uneven profile (L 60, R 52, S 44, W 52): 7.0 + 6.0 + 5.5 + 6.0 = 24.5, divided by four is 6.125, which IELTS rounds to 6.0. Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
