What is special about exactly 59

• PTE 59 is exactly the score needed for UK visa CEFR B2: Student visa at degree level or above, and new Skilled Worker applications (59 in each skill).
• Victoria University (Australia): masters degrees needs 60 (overall 60, no section below 52), so 59 is 1 point short.
• 59 is the first PTE score that reads as IELTS 7.0 in Reading.
• 59 is the last PTE score that still reads as IELTS 6.0 in Writing; 60 moves it to 6.5.
• 59 is the first PTE score on Pearson's B2 band.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 59. The second makes Writing strong (67) and Reading weak (51), each 8 points from 59.

• Even profile (L 59, R 59, S 59, W 59): 7.0 + 7.0 + 6.0 + 6.0 = 26.0, divided by four is 6.50, which IELTS rounds to 6.5. That matches the direct overall conversion of 6.5.
• Uneven profile (L 59, R 51, S 59, W 67): 7.0 + 6.0 + 6.0 + 6.5 = 25.5, divided by four is 6.375, which IELTS rounds to 6.5. Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
