Pearson maps PTE 77 to CEFR C1 (PTE 76–84). C2 starts at 85, 8 points higher.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 77. The second makes Reading strong (85) and Writing weak (69), each 8 points from 77.

• Even profile (L 77, R 77, S 77, W 77): 8.5 + 8.5 + 7.0 + 7.5 = 31.5, divided by four is 7.875, which IELTS rounds to 8.0. The direct overall conversion of PTE 77 gives 7.5, so the two routes differ by 0.5: Pearson converts the overall and each skill with separate tables.
• Uneven profile (L 77, R 85, S 77, W 69): 8.5 + 9.0 + 7.0 + 7.0 = 31.5, divided by four is 7.875, which IELTS rounds to 8.0. Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
