IELTS 9.0 has just one overall PTE score, 90, in Pearson's table.

What is special about exactly 90

• 90 is the first PTE score that reads as IELTS 8.5 in Speaking.
• 90 is the first PTE score that reads as IELTS 8.5 in Writing.

PTE 90 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own Pearson table. Speaking and Writing convert lowest at IELTS 8.5, and Listening and Reading convert highest at 9.0, a spread of 1 half-band. Speaking (8.5) and Writing (8.5) differ from the overall conversion of 9.0.

Australian English levels at PTE 90

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 90 in every skill the highest level is Superior English (test from 7 August 2025) or Superior English (earlier test). 90 lands on the same level whichever test version you sat. 90 already meets the highest level Home Affairs lists.

UK, New Zealand and Canada at PTE 90

Pearson maps PTE 90 to CEFR C2 (PTE 85–90). C2 is the top band.

UK figures apply to each skill, so read them as 90 in every skill. New Zealand: 90 is above all three overall thresholds, the highest being 58 by 32. Canada's tables convert PTE Core, not Academic, so none is applied: Canada guide. New Zealand guide and UK guide.

What it takes to move up from PTE 90

PTE 90 is the top of the scale, so there is no higher threshold. The aim at this level is to hold 90 in every skill, because a visa or course that asks for a per-skill score is judged on the lowest skill.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 90. The second makes Speaking strong (90) and Listening weak (82), each 8 points from 90.

• Even profile (L 90, R 90, S 90, W 90): 9.0 + 9.0 + 8.5 + 8.5 = 35.0, divided by four is 8.75, which IELTS rounds to 9.0 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). That matches the direct overall conversion of 9.0.
• Uneven profile (L 82, R 90, S 90, W 90): 9.0 + 9.0 + 8.5 + 8.5 = 35.0, divided by four is 8.75, which IELTS rounds to 9.0 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
