VU PTE Academic requirements by level

Scores are on the PTE 10 to 90 scale. "Each skill at least" means Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing must each reach that figure, as well as the overall score. Where a row shows a figure for each skill, those are the minimums for that skill. Scroll sideways on a small screen.

Waivers and English pathways

Ways VU says you may not need to submit a PTE score, or may reach the requirement another way.

  • VU may recognise prior study in English (for example two years of senior secondary schooling or tertiary study in an English-speaking country, or a recognised Australian foundation program) instead of a test, if completed within the stated time limits. Check the lists of specified countries in the guide.

    Official wording
“If you have completed some or all of your academic study in English, we may recognise your prior English language studies”

    From vu.edu.au, read on 13 Oct 2026.

  • Postgraduate applicants may be recognised after at least two years of full-time undergraduate study in a non-English-speaking country where English was the medium of instruction and assessment for the whole institution, completed within two years before enrolment.

    Official wording
“Successful completion of at least two years' full-time academic study (at undergraduate degree level or higher) completed in the standard duration”

    From vu.edu.au, read on 13 Oct 2026.

  • Applicants can alternatively meet the requirement with VU English (English for Academic Purposes), for example Level 5 for bachelor and Level 6 for masters.

    Official wording
“VU English – English for Academic Purposes (EAP) (Level 6): achieved.”

    From vu.edu.au, read on 13 Oct 2026.

Good to know before you apply

  • Test results must be no more than two years old at course start.
  • Courses such as nursing, teaching, law and social work have higher English requirements; the official guide gives these in IELTS and VU English only.

What to practise for VU

Every skill carries the same highest minimum on this page: 52, set by the Bachelor's row. No single skill stands out, so start with your lowest skill score on your latest score report.

Which PTE test, and how long a score lasts

PTE AcademicAccepted

PTE Academic is listed as a recognised test. The official guide lists only IELTS and VU English figures for the higher-requirement courses (law, nursing, education and others), so no PTE figure is recorded for them; check with VU.

Pearson's own rules on validity are in our PTE score validity guide. Compare tests in PTE Academic vs Core vs UKVI.

English requirements can differ by course, faculty and intake, and universities change them. These figures are what VU's pages said when we checked on 13 October 2026. A requirement that is not on this page may still exist for your course. The official pages we used:
