What is special about exactly 47

• 47 is the first PTE score that reads as IELTS 6.0 in Listening.
• 47 is the last PTE score that still reads as IELTS 5.5 in Reading; 48 moves it to 6.0.

PTE 47 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own Pearson table. Reading, Speaking and Writing convert lowest at IELTS 5.5, and Listening converts highest at 6.0, a spread of 1 half-band. Reading (5.5), Speaking (5.5) and Writing (5.5) differ from the overall conversion of 6.0.

Australian English levels at PTE 47

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 47 in every skill the highest level is Vocational English (test from 7 August 2025) or Vocational English (earlier test). 47 lands on the same level whichever test version you sat. Next up is Competent English: short in Reading (needs 48, +1), Speaking (needs 54, +7) and Writing (needs 51, +4); already clear Listening (47).

Pearson maps PTE 47 to CEFR B1 (PTE 43–58). B2 starts at 59, 12 points higher.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 47. The second makes Writing strong (55) and Reading weak (39), each 8 points from 47.

• Even profile (L 47, R 47, S 47, W 47): 6.0 + 5.5 + 5.5 + 5.5 = 22.5, divided by four is 5.625, which IELTS rounds to 5.5. The direct overall conversion of PTE 47 gives 6.0, so the two routes differ by 0.5: Pearson converts the overall and each skill with separate tables.
• Uneven profile (L 47, R 39, S 47, W 55): 6.0 + 5.0 + 5.5 + 6.0 = 22.5, divided by four is 5.625, which IELTS rounds to 5.5. Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
