• Victoria University (Australia): bachelor degrees needs 52 (overall 52, no section below 52), so 51 is 1 point short.
• 51 is the first PTE score that reads as IELTS 6.0 in Writing.

PTE 51 as an IELTS band in each skill

Each skill has its own Pearson table. Speaking converts lowest at IELTS 5.5, and Listening, Reading and Writing convert highest at 6.0, a spread of 1 half-band. Speaking (5.5) differs from the overall conversion of 6.0.

Australian English levels at PTE 51

Each skill has its own minimum, and a strong skill cannot cover a weak one. With 51 in every skill the highest level is Vocational English (test from 7 August 2025) or Competent English (earlier test). 51 did better on the old test (Competent English) than it does on the new one (Vocational English), because the new Speaking and Writing minimums sit above the old single figure. Next up is Competent English: short in Speaking (needs 54, +3); already clear Listening (47), Reading (48) and Writing (51).

Pearson maps PTE 51 to CEFR B1 (PTE 43–58). B2 starts at 59, 8 points higher.

Worked example: how four skills turn into one IELTS band

IELTS averages four section bands and rounds to the nearest half band. Here is that arithmetic for two profiles built around 51. The second makes Writing strong (59) and Reading weak (43), each 8 points from 51.

• Even profile (L 51, R 51, S 51, W 51): 6.0 + 6.0 + 5.5 + 6.0 = 23.5, divided by four is 5.875, which IELTS rounds to 6.0. That matches the direct overall conversion of 6.0.
• Uneven profile (L 51, R 43, S 51, W 59): 6.0 + 5.5 + 5.5 + 6.0 = 23.0, divided by four is 5.75, which IELTS rounds to 6.0 (an average ending .25 or .75 rounds up). Same overall as the even profile: the strong and weak skills offset.
